Burn @ 1:56... was that on purpose?

OK, this is probably a little odd, but.. I recently cranked up Burn on a high end stereo, strictly a two channel setup. Around 1:56 in, plus or minus a couple (under "so let me KNOW just how to take this"), there's a guitar growl that pops out of the song - to my left and a little bit *behind* me.

OK, so anyone with a copy of Waters' Amused To Death knows about Q-sound processing, audio trickery that can be done to make sounds seem to come from unexpected places, like behind you, when you're facing a pair of stereo speakers. Q-sound only works if a stereo is set up carefully (most folk don't bother), and if the studio goes to some pains to mix for it. So you don't see it in a lot of tracks, by anybody. It's a little strange to think that one note in a song would get that treatment.

On the other hand, the number of times a straight stereo recording has accidentally caused a Q-sound effect... I can think of maybe once I've heard that happen. And this is pretty clear and distinct: one single note, left and back maybe 30 degrees, right where Waters likes to put background noises. The first time I heard it I thought I had a wasp in the room.

So I have to know. On purpose, or just a freak effect of the mix? If on purpose, good for 3DG, I like little surprises and tricks.

Anyone else who noticed this, or, hey, anyone from the band, that wants to comment, great. Not knowing won't keep me up nights, but I'm curious.

Im pretty sure it is intentional, and I think there are 2 if I heard correctly.

Having some trouble buying it's an accident. You really have to hack a waveform up in specific ways, messing with phase, to get it to fool the ear like that, and it shouldn't be possible to tweak the phase in the course of normal mixing.

Oh well. I doubt there's anyway to track down the mixing engineer and ask some pointed questions...

I listened to it closely - I think it's not intentional, but that's just my opinion. I think it's created by the combo of the sounds going on where they are... or, it sounds like the guitar is looped or extended or something right there, could be the result of cutting/pasting in an editing program? It really doesn't sound intentional though to me.

Anyway - that's my take on it. Still sounds awesome, the 1st album is my favorite for the sound, I love the feel of it.

I'll never forget August 29, 2008!

OOH. Very good! I've noticed it too - I do a lot of home recording, but I never thought that deep into it. It might be a little 'signature' - I've known things like that to take place from time to time... the engineer may put their mark on an album somewhere somehow.

I'll listen to it close tonight and see if I can analyze it a bit with ya. Good post, thanks!
